Karen Byrnes's Bio

Karen Byrnes is a native of Frederick County.  Karen grew up in Walkersville and currently resides in Walkersville with her husband Leo of 38 years.  She is a graduate of Walkersville High School and James Madison University. Karen is the mother of two daughters, Stacy and Stephanie.  She also has three, soon to be four, grandchildren, Brayden, Kinsley, and Lily.

Karen is a retired Frederick County Public School teacher, where she taught elementary school for 39 years.  She is well-known and respected throughout the community by many past students, parents, and colleagues for her commitment and dedication to her students.  Since retirement she has shown the same dedication and love to her grandchildren with whom she enjoys spending lots of time with throwing the baseball, riding bikes, reading, laughing and playing with.

Karen found out she had Stage III B-Cell Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma after experiencing what she thought may be kidney stones.  An ultrasound she had done to test for this revealed a mass, leading to additional testing, and finally this diagnosis. She will have 6 rounds of chemotherapy every 3 weeks to beat this disease!

Karen has always put others before herself and continues to do so not even feeling 100%.  She is the most selfless, down to earth, fun-loving persons. Karen has a heart of gold and is always quick to help others in need.  Now is our time to pay it forward and to help her!
