April Handy Izer

Stage III Breast Cancer

Thanks For Your Support!

April Handy Izer's Bio

When faced with 40, a woman usually has a pretty good idea of what her life is going to look like…at least she THINKS she does. Just 9 days before her 40th birthday, April became a newlywed…full of hope and promise and lots of plans ahead for travel and a great life with her new husband and their two chocolate labs. Having recently walked away from a career as a Research Biologist to pursue her dreams of running her own health and nutrition company and with a schedule packed with all things running – finishing a marathon, half marathons around the country, getting her running coach certification and helping others pursue their running goals – as well as being an avid yogi and helping to manage the growth of her husband’s production company, everything seemed picture perfect. In March of 2015, a little over 5 months in, the diagnosis of stage III breast cancer brought everything to a screeching halt.

We’re told the first year of marriage is the hardest…I guess this is a test of that ‘in sickness and in health’ part of the vows – make sure he was serious, right? Following a mastectomy and lymph node dissection, April is currently in the middle of chemotherapy. While it’s certainly a struggle, and frustrating to someone used to an active lifestyle, she keeps a positive attitude and is looking forward to moving through the rest of her treatments, including radiation and a few additional surgeries, to get to the good that’s on the other side.

With the support of her amazing husband and all of their friends and family members…and with God walking beside her, there is no doubt that April will get through this, knowing this is part of her story…and continue to pursue a fulfilling and meaningful life full of many more smiles to come.
